Natural History Museum in Tring

I must admit I found that museum quite creepy at the beginning with all those stuffed and mounted animals. We went there with some children from a Saturday Polish School and one of my pupils kept asking “Why did they have to kill all those animals?” It wasn’t easy to explain that most of those animals were found already dead and some of them were even kept alive at the private Baron’s grounds in Tring.

Muszę przyznać, że początkowo, Muzeum w Tring zrobiło na mnie trochę ponure wrażenie ze swoimi oprawionymi, wypchanymi zwierzętami. Pojechaliśmy tam z dziećmi z polskiej sobotniej szkoly i jeden z moich uczniów cięgle pytał : “Dlaczego oni musieli zabić te wszystkie zwierzęta?” Trudno było wyjasnić, że większość z nich została przekazana “pośmiertnie” a niektóre, Baron Rothschild trzymał żywe w swoim prywatnym parku.

When I did some research on Lionel Walter, 2nd Baron Rothschild (1868), Museum’s founder, I found out that he decided to make it when he was just 7 years old. From the cassowary to the zebra, Baron Rothschild collected them all. He was fascinated by animals and dedicated his life to studying zoology. After his death, according to his will, the family gifted the whole museum to Natural History in London.

Kiedy poczytałam trochę więcej o Lionelu Walterze, II Baronie Rothschild (1868), dowiedziałam się, że decyzję o zalożeniu muzeum podjął już jako siedmioletni chłopiec. Od kazuarów po zebry, zebral je wszystkie! Był zafascynowany zwierzętami i spedził swoje życie na studiowanie zoologii. Po jego śmierci, zgodnie z jego wolą, rodzina oddała zbiory wraz z budynkiem dla Muzeum Historii Naturalnej w Londynie.

Whatever the first impression, the children really liked the animals and looking at some extinct species.

Abstrahując od pierwszego wrażenia, dzieciom podobały się zwierzęta, zwłaszcza te, które już wyginęły.

Personally, what I liked best was an exhibition 50 Years of Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

A mnie najbardziej podobala się wystawa 50 lat Fotografa Natury Roku.

After the visit, together with my own children I had a nice stroll down the town centre and a lunch in a cosy Italian restaurant. Is Tring worth seeing? Oh definitely..

Po wizycie w muzeum, wraz ze swoimi dziećmi odbyłam obowiązkowy spacerek po miasteczku z przystankiem na obiad w przytulnej włoskiej restauracji. Czy warto zobaczyć Tring? Zdecydowanie tak!
